The following is a list of resources used for overall health.
Both of these training studios focus on SuperSlow® High-Intensity Training (HIT). It’s safe, efficient and effective for building muscle and losing fat.
The egoscue clinic is a postural correction place. They have figured out how to assess people and created a list of exercises that can turn muscles on for correct alignment. Prior to going to Egoscue, I had an entire sequence that I manually controlled to bend over. Tighten my abdominals, bend at the waist, slightly bend the knees, contract my glutes…this whole sequence. After a single session there, I just bent down to pick up my backpack. That was very, very cool. I just effortlessly bent down.
Back Specific Exercise
The Foundation Training was my first really good experience of a program that targeted back muscles and helped me get stronger. It consists of a number of moves that make your back muscles fire and burn. This lessened my pain considerably. It definitely helped me.
Back Pain Mindset Fix
This has been by far the single best book to read. Everything else I have tried to do has been based on the assumption that back pain is due to a musculoskeletal issue. This book considers back pain as a habit of thinking and behavior. I’m paraphrasing, but it asks you to question your beliefs about your situation and approaching it differently. I believe that since I corrected my back structural issues and strengthened everything that this was the key that led to the end of my back pain.
When your back is hurt and you can’t exercise, there are still things you can control to make yourself healthier. One of the very big levers you can pull is the eating choice lever. You can completely lose weight while being immobile. It is a power consolation to be able trim up even though you are having difficulty moving. When my wife broke her leg and was bed-ridden for 3 weeks, I led her through a low carbohydrate, moderate protein, moderate fat diet that drove 10lbs of fat loss.
If you are suffering from back pain and you feel your life is headed in a dark direction, I completely recommend Stoic philosophy. Essentially, you can compartmentalize your decisions into three areas.
- Things you can control directly like how you think, what you eat, what actions you can take to heal yourself.
- Things you can influence and how much effort you want to put into them to some benefit like getting a promotion or getting someone to loan you money.
- Things you have no control over and you might as well just accept them and figure out what the next best thing you can control is in 1 above.
To that end, I recommend reading Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, and a Guide to the Good Life by William Irvine. However, I will weave Stoic philosophy into all of my work for you so that you don’t need to dig into the core principles.
